APRIL 2013 in Patricia's Wellness Arts Gallery Vibrational Energy Art?

First Friday, April 5, 2013 "Native Land" Photography of Ai Takahashi opens in Patricia's Wellness Arts Gallery. Opening Reception is from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.

Ai Takahashi, visiting scholar, says that landscapes are at once events of the earth and the stage on which our human lives evolve to become our histories. As the layers of our lives accumulate, just like the geological beds of the earth, our existence becomes rooted in its layers.

Rural agrarian life (inaka) has long stood in juxtaposition to an urban existence, to a world overflowing with information. But now the idea of inaka as "an ordinary farming community," struggles to sustain itself. In my work I seek out the voices of people living in such communities. While tangible, their voices are not to be found in textbooks or the news media. Still, collectively these modest voices represent the grounded history of these small farming communities.

Life in these rural villages, rooted in the community members' sense of responsibility for place, provides an abundance that I find prescient. Inherent in village life is gentleness and tranquility, a severity and awe, a pantheistic prayer to god as the whole of creation. On my travels I search for the roots of Japaneseness through an exploration of human agency and disappearing cultural traditions.

September 2012 in Patricia's Wellness Arts Gallery Vibrational Energy Art?

~September 7th - October 30th, "LOTUS - Textures of Life" paintings by Paul Kane in the Wellness Arts Gallery. Join us for the First Friday Opening Reception September 7th, 2012, 5pm to 8pm for paintings by Paul Kane. On the first Friday in October, join the artist in the gallery for a discussion. Visit the gallery calendar or email us for more information.
A Boston native, Paul Kane came to Bloomington in 1989, to study painting at IU, after having studied at Yale and in Boston. Kane's father came from Indiana, and the area felt like home to Paul, the pace of life in Bloomington being more gentle than East Coast life tends to be - with plenty of room for rabbits and creeks - yet still culturally rich.

Paul Kane's painting has roots in German 19th century neo-medievalism and 20th century Boston based neo-expressionism. His paintings range from figurative to abstract, always exploring color and texture, but also exploring the relationships of figures as simple as rectangles, and as complicated as people. No two paintings are approached the same way; a painter has habits, like every other person, but in the end a good painting must transcend them. Kane's techniques are based in tradition, but very intuitive. He often uses materials that come to him, such as found boards and donated paints, exploring the possibilities for 'little miracles' in what has been lost, or set aside, exploring unexpected paths towards wholeness.

B. J. Kish Irvine - April 2012

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My interest in Chinese ink painting stems from my nearly life-long love of watercolor painting. Fascinated by Chinese painting, I had the extraordinary opportunity to begin studying this technique in 1990 when Zhiyuan Cong, Professor, Dept. of Chinese Painting, Nanjing Arts Institute, P.R.C., came to Indiana University to expand his graduate studies. As his student, I studied from a traditional vantage point which included Chinese calligraphy, ink painting, and seal carving. This style of art allows me to freely express my love for the rhythm and elegance of Chinese calligraphic forms, the play of negative and positive spaces, and the joy of traditional Chinese brushwork, ink, and handmade paper.
